Suehiro serves healthy Japanese cuisine

Date Posted: 2010-02-04

Tempura and sushi headline the menu at Suehiro’s traditional Japanese restaurant, but the proud owners emphasize there’s much more waiting guests.

Traditional Japanese foods—miso soup, fish, mushrooms, seaweed, steamed rice—abound at Suehiro, which is owned and operated by the same married couple that opened the restaurant more than 30 years ago. Suehiro, a koryouriya-style restaurant, puts an emphasis on seafood, which is served to guests either at the counter or in the more intimate setting of tatami rooms.

The owners point out that traditional Japanese foods are more healthy than western foods, which tend to be higher in calories and carbohydrates. Overall Japanese foods are better for people who suffer from lifestyle-related diseases. The menu is varied, with prices ranging from ¥600 ~ ¥2,000 at lunchtime, which runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The most popular item on the menu is baked white fish with sea urchin for a modest ¥840.

Suehiro is open daily 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., offering English menus and accepting both U.S. dollars and Japanese yen. Suehiro is located near Gate 2 Street in Okinawa City. Coming from KAB Gate 2, turn left onto Route 330 at the Goya intersection, then immediately right, and you’ll see Suehiro immediately at the corner of the first street on the left. Pay parking is available in front of the restaurant across the street.
