Zamami launches a new village promotion project

Date Posted: 2010-02-04

As tourist numbers began falling in Zamami Village not too long ago, residents decided to step up and implement some new programs to lure tourists to the small island village.

The tiny island located west of Okinawa’s main island relies almost exclusively on tourists for its livelihood. Served by the Kerama Airport, Zamami Village touts its scuba diving, snorkeling and sea kayaking opportunities, as well as its crystal clear waters and Furuzamami Beach. Visitors to Zamami frequently rent motor scooters to get around the island’s narrow, winding and picturesque mountain roads.

To attract more tourists, the new project offers ¥1,000 local area discount coupons to visitors staying in Zamami Village hotels, lodges or private residences. Village Mayor Tetsu Miyazato approved the measure at last week’s Village Assembly meeting. “By using this coupon, tourists can go shopping and get ¥1,000 worth of goods, he says. “This will, we hope, cause the tourism business and the village economy to go up.

The number of tourists has been dropping since 2008. The coupon is being offered to all visitors from age 6, and to those who purchase ferry tickets to Zamami Village. The new program goes into effect April 1st.
