Date Posted: 2010-02-04

Jan and Gunilla Nogius say they think “Okinawa is a wonderful Island.” They’re absorbing Okinawa culture now as they sail around the world on their nine-ton yacht.

The 62-year-old Swedish couple sailed from Gothenburg in southern Sweden in June 2007, and have already visited Spain, Portugal, Tonga, New Zealand and other southern hemisphere countries before heading to Japan last year. They arrived at Ie Island aboard their 11-meter yacht, the RIBA, in mid-January. They sailed around the world 13 years 13 years ago, and are now giving it a second shot. Jan, who works for an IT company in Sweden, says he’s taking a vacation.

The couple picks up food at each locale, and supplements purchases with fishing aboard the yacht. They say they want to see a local sabani boat, because they like the culture. This is their first visit to Okinawa. “We love to touch and see and communicate with the world’s people, they say, “and we love to talk to the local people.
