Hiker group gets lost in Kunigami hills, rescued

Date Posted: 2002-11-09

A group of hikers got lost while climbing a forested hill in Nago, Sunday. A rescue party sent from Kunigami Fire Station was able to locate the group some four hours later. All were unharmed.

According to Nago Police, a man belonging to the group called the police station as darkness started to fall, and said that eleven members of his hiking group had failed to show up at an agreed meeting point. He said that the lost group consisted of three men and women and five children.

The area in Kunigami Village where the group was hiking is, although covered with jungle, very popular among hikers. A member of the 20 strong rescue team from Kunigami Fire Station spotted the missing group four hours later. Group members told the rescue team that they had been collecting herbs and flowers in the area and lost track of time. When darkness fell they decided that it would be too dangerous to try to come down the hill through the jungle and decided to stay overnight. They said that they had planned to build a campfire to keep them warm but had abandoned the idea.

The group had left to the forest in the morning following Okuma River. After a lunch in the forest, six of the group went their own way after agreeing to meet at their starting point at 4 p.m. When the rest of the group failed to appear, they called the police.
