Pull for best of luck for whole year

Date Posted: 2003-10-11

Naha City’s Great Tug-of-War, officially recognized as the largest event of its kind in the world by the Guinness Book of Records, takes center stage Sunday. The festivities begin on Hwy 58 at Izumizaki Intersection in Naha starting at noon, with the actual tug of war taking place at 4:30pm. The event is the highlight of Naha Festival, which runs for three days, beginning Saturday.

Tug-of-Wars are traditionally conducted in Okinawa as a rite to ensure a good harvest and prosperity for the coming year. Other venues of the three-day extravaganza are Kokusai Street, featuring several parades, and Onoyama Park, the main stage for the festival.

The festival at Onoyama Park is divided into two parts, a ‘Citizens’ Festival’ featuring culturally oriented programs, and the other, the ‘Orion Beer Paradise’ concentrating on popular live music, including a performance by Japan’s most popular band Begin. The Ishigaki Island band Begin plays Sunday starting 7 p.m. Fireworks ends festival activities all three days, starting at 8:30 p.m.
