Teen prank kills boy in Naha City

Date Posted: 2010-01-21

What began as a youthful prank, with a group of boys climbing along balcony railings and onto a building roof in Naha City’s Tsubogawa district has ended with the death of a 16-year-old.

Police say the teenager was one of a group that was climbing from one balcony to another on the ninth floor of a city-owned apartment building Saturay when he slipped and fell 21 meters down to his death on the concrete roof of a veranda. “We were trying to climb to the roof from a balcony and outside the railing,” one of the other boys said. “We put our courage to the test, and he was the first to try. By accident, he fell down.”

The friends told police last weekend’s incident was not the first time they’d been playing such games. The boys, who all live near each other, said they’d done it before. This time, though, “there was a muffled thump of someone falling over,” said a resident. “We were wondering what happened, and then an ambulance came and took someone.”
