Naha City employee nailed on suspicion of bribery charges

Date Posted: 2010-01-21

A 53-year-old Naha City employee has been arrested and charged with suspicion of accepting a bribe from a construction company president.

Isao Nakachi is behind bars for taking a bribe from Touru Zayasu, a 42-year-old president of a local construction firm. Police say Nakachi , who works as head of the city’s road construction work section office, took ¥200,000~300,000 bribes from as many as 10 construction companies. He was in charge of decisions on vendor contractors. Police say Nakachi has confessed to many of the charge specifications, while the construction company president has admitted to only some of the charges.

Nakachi’s fellow workers say they’re surprised, expressing the belief “Isao Nakachi is a very hard worker.” Still, others say they wondered about him, because he spent a lot of time at night clubs and went home late. Neighbors say they thought the same thing, questioning how a city employee could spent so much time at night clubs, asking “Do city workers get paid so well?”
