Kamisushi pleases palate and eyes

Date Posted: 2010-01-14

There’s sushi, and there’s Kamisushi. The quite newly opened sushi restaurant in Mihama is traditional Japanese, but then adds the eye appeal of a creative open presentation.

Kamisushi’s design is unique, with a kitchen totally open style so customers can watch Chef Isamu Kamiya create sushi or frying Tempura, or whatever specials are being turned out for customers. The owner-chef, Kamiya-san, entered the hospitality world via the bar, then moved to a Kappo—Japanese style restaurant—in Tokyo for five years, and then went on donning the chef’s hat at a wedding ceremony hall.

Throughout his training, Kamiya’s goal and dream was sushi. He had a fascination with sushi, and couldn’t wait to create a sushi haven his way. Kamisushi is his creation, brought together with support from his friend Yoshi Maekawa, the owner of one of Okinawa’s most known sushi restaurants, Yoshihachi. With Kamisushi now a reality, Kamiya’s next goal is a joint venture with another friend, currently working at Nobu Matsuhisa, a well-known sushi restaurant in Los Angeles. Kamiya gives that friend the credit for initiating him into the art of American style fashionable roll sushi.

In Mihama, Kamisushi features lunch specials with sets of sushi and sushi rolls, tempura, kobachi, soup and a salad, and a Chicken Teriyaki Set with chicken teriyaki, tempura, kobachi, rice, soup and salad. Each set is offered at ¥980, including drink and dessert.

Popular menus include the Spider Roll at ¥1,300, Tiger Roll for ¥1,200, a Kami Roll ¥1,000, or a Tempura Set for ¥1,200. There’s also an Okinawa Pork set known as Agu for ¥2,000 and a 130 grams Okinawa Beef Steak for ¥3,800.
Kamisushi is open daily 11 a.m. ~ 2 p.m. for lunch, and from 5 p.m. ~ 11 p.m. for dinner. Reservations are available at (098) 926-3290. It is located in the building behind Makeman in Mihama, on the second floor just above Mihama McDonald’s. Free parking is available next to the building.
