Sanitation facility fires up new incinerator

Date Posted: 2010-01-14

Mayors of three Okinawa municipalities celebrated the New Year with ceremonies inaugurating a new incinerator at Kurahama Sanitation Facility.

The new incinerator, which will officially go into operational service in April, will serve Okinawa City, Ginowan City and Chatan Town. The incinerator is capable of burning 309 tons of garbage each day, and its own heat will be used to generate electricity through a steam turbine. The Kurahama facility, with the incinerator online, will move next to build a recycle center for paper and bottles.

Mitsuko Tomon, Okinawa Citys mayor, Yoichi Iha, mayor of Ginowan City, and Chatan Town mayor Masaharu Noguni pulled the switch firing up the incinerator in ceremonies at the plant in Okinawa Citys Ikehara area. Together with construction company directors who built the incinerator facility, the group burned last years trash. Im so happy to see this incinerator and put fire to it, said Mayor Tomon. It was hard bringing this incinerator, but because of the local area people and their support and cooperation, it worked well. Im looking forward to April.
