Tiger to lead the lunar new year

The Tiger is getting ready to replace the Ox as the lunar new year approaches February 14th.

People are already heading to the shrines to pray for happiness in the Year of the Tiger ahead, according to Buddhist teachings. Excitement on Okinawa is high about the Year of the Tiger because Okinawa Cityís Zoo now has two tigers in residence.

The male tiger, Shima, has been a fixture at the zoo for years. Heís been joined by Yuri, a tigress brought to Okinawa City last August from Sumatra. The female tigerís 12 years old, and is sharing zoo space with the 16-year-old Shima.
