Shoppers line up to get Fukubukuro

Date Posted: 2010-01-07

As department stores opened their doors for business January 2nd, long lines of patrons lined the entryways as they sought Fukubukuro, the Happy Bags being offered for sale at amazing prices.

The gift bags, which range from ¥3,000 ~ 20,000, are bargains because the value of goods inside can range from two to four times the cost price. At Mitsukoshi Department Store, first shoppers were lined up outside the store at 3 a.m., despite the fact the store didn’t open until 9 a.m. Mitsukoshi had prepared 800 Fukubukuro, and they were quickly snapped up as more than 1,000 people had lined up for a chance at the gift bags.

Department store officials say 10 bags had special coupons inside valued at ¥100,000, including one for winning a plasma television set. Other department stores report crowds of 3,000 lining up for a shot at the Fukubukuro. They had to repeatedly warn shoppers “Please don’t push” while hearing cries of “Oh, no, this is mine!”
