Alleged embezzlement confuses officials at Gusukube

Date Posted: 2002-11-02

Officials at Gusukube Town in Miyako are scratching their heads, as the town auditors believe that some •49 million yen is missing from the city coffers. The auditors believe that a female former accountant of the town pocketed the money, but they cannot figure out how and when. The city officials have reported their suspicions to the police, but they have not been able to come to a conclusion either. The accountant has neither admitted nor denied the allegation, and remains silent.

Further confusing matters, the suspectís husband showed up at the town office with •22 million in cash that he handed to the startled town officials wowing to repay all of the •49 that is missing. Town officials agreed to take the money for safekeeping but said that they cannot accept the money as a repayment before they have proof that the accountant really embezzled the money. They say that before the police investigation is complete, they donít even know whether they can take the case to court.

The money was originally given to Gusukube Town by J.A. (Japan Agriculture) Gusukube Branch for safekeeping. However, an auditor with J.A. Gusukube Branch says that only •10 million is missing. The suspect formerly used to work at J.A. Gusukube Branch, and some people say that her friends at her former office are trying to protect her.
