Marines arrested after stealing, crashing taxi

Date Posted: 2008-10-10

The setting could have been from a movie, but it was real life as taxi drivers chased another taxi stolen by two U.S. Marines through Okinawa streets before the stolen vehicle careened out of control and crashed into five cars.

The two Lance Corporals were apprehended near the crash scene and are being held by Okinawa police. The incident began at Chatan’s American Village, where witnesses say the two Marines, Matthew J. Eckersen, 21, and Shane R. Stodghill, 20, commandeered the taxi from a taxi stand and raced off with Eckersen at the wheel.

The 50-year-old driver of the stolen taxi, who was chatting with other taxi drivers at the taxi stand, called police while his colleagues gave chase. From Chatan, the chase headed down Highway 58 over a half-hour period, with police joining the pursuit along the way. Finally, at Isa Intersection, the stolen taxi struck five cars and Eckersen lost control. Both Marines fled the scene, but were captured less than a half-kilometer away.

Okinawa City Police say Eckersen, assigned to Camp Foster, failed a breathalyzer test with 0.51 milligrams per liter of alcohol, while Stodghill, assigned to Camp Courtney, registered 0.7 milligrams. The legal limit is 0.15 milligrams per liter.
