Funding forces Kin Town to drop Marmoset projectDate Posted: 2008-10-03 Marmoset is a breed of monkey used in medical and pharmaceutical research because of its closeness to human genes. The Kin Town center was to breed and raise the Marmoset for sale to medical universities. Kin Town officials say “this facility was to be built by subsidy money for the northern Okinawa promotion project, but the subsidy money ends in 2009 and there’s not enough time to complete the facility while the money’s available.” The monkeys are used for medical experiments and for testing medicines. Two medical universities were going to send scientists to conduct studies, and were going to purchase the land needed to raise the animals. Officials say the project would have created 25 new jobs, and sales of more than 1,500 Marmosets were projected each year, bringing Kin Town a profit of ¥450 million.
