Environmental damage charged as Awase tidelands work resumesDate Posted: 2008-05-09 The Committee Members of Protection of Awase Tidelands has again issued a call for the government to stop construction, charging “there is no future at all to do this construction.” Rep. Tomo Kobashigawa and Katsuhide Hisaya, together with four other Committee members, has demanded the Okinawa Prefecture General Bureau construction section stop all work. “You guys don’t think about our future,” they told Prefecture officials. The Committee is accusing the Prefecture of breaching rules and fishing regulations, and also of permitting damage to coral extraction. Kobashigawa says the Prefecture is illegally dealing with coral. “The Prefecture made damages,” he says, and “it must file a report telling who’s telling the right thing. We have to know.” The lawmaker says “we are the ones doing the right things, and we want the construction to stop right now.” Prefecture officials contend the construction actions are lawful, and that they are far enough advanced not to be stopped.
