Toxic chemicals found in Tomigusuku pondDate Posted: 2008-05-09 The Prefecture Environment Protection Section was quickly called in, and they “checked the water in the pond, and fish that were dead, and we found high concentrations of very poisonous organic chemistry insecticide called parathion.” Parathion is an agricultural chemical which has been banned from Okinawa for more than 30 years, leaving officials puzzled where it came from. The Naha Natural Environment Office says “it looks like the spatula heron at the dead fish, infecting himself.” An investigator says they’ve traced the agricultural chemicals from the pond water to a drain, which continues to the waterway of nearby farm fields.
