Okinawa coral transplants saving mainland islandDate Posted: 2008-05-02 The Fisheries Infrastructure Development Center has been working for nearly a year to take coral from the sea in the Okinotorishima Island area, transplant it to Aka Island in Okinawa, and foster development of the coral to lay eggs. Okinotorishima Island sits 1,000 kilometers south of Tokyo. Eroding coastline was threatening to submerge the island, which serves as a marker of Japan’s exclusive economic zone. Officials say coral eggs were hatched more than ten months ago, and more than 65,000 coral were nurtured in containers to a size of 1.5 centimeters. Those coral are now being transplanted in the ocean waters around Okinotorishima Island. Discuss this story: Click here to discuss this story on our forums. communityentertainment
