Rockin with the weekend White Beach FestivalBy: Bill Charles Date Posted: 2007-11-09    The White Beach Festival opens at 4 pm Friday, working its way into the evening with the Americana and folk rock sounds of Acoustic Live. Beach activities set the stage for the 8 p.m. performance, while a variety of food, game and entertainment booths offer a myriad of activities for the whole family. It’s Veterans Day weekend, with the holiday itself coming on Sunday, the final day of the White Beach Festival. The festival runs to midnight Friday, then noon to midnight Saturday. Sunday’s more of the same, except for an 11 p.m. closing. The White Beach Festival is open to everyone, islandwide. There’s plenty to do during the festival, including banana boat rides and jet ski action both Saturday and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. There will be a kiddyland, tons of foods from all over the world, and vendor booths of all sorts. For many, though, it’s the music that’s the big deal. And Navy Morale, Welfare and Recreation agrees, noting there’ll be more than a dozen entertainment acts on stage across the festival. Saturday the Awkward Clowns perform at 12:30 p.m, followed at 1:30 p.m. by the Ke Aloha Polynesian dancers. Byron Jones and Wakatida Tako perform for one and 1 hours starting at 3 p.m. The Awkward Clowns make a return appearance at 5 p.m., Ryukyu Buyo dance takes to the stage at 6 p.m., and it’s classic rock n’ roll for the evening with Handsome Stranger. Awkward Clowns perform at 12:30 and 5:15 p.m. Sunday, along with T-DA Dance Studios dancers doing hip hop at 1:15 p.m. Taiko drummers Tenryu Daiko follow at 2 p.m., and Travelin’ Max family entertainment at 2:45 p.m. S.K.F. Family Dancers show off their hip hop and break dance styles at 4 p.m., while Mindy McQ fills the evening with a two-hour Soul, R & B and pop evening beginning at 7 p.m. Byron Jones is an American, one of the few foreigners certified a shamisen instructor in Okinawa. He offers up both traditional and non-traditional Okinawan tunes, while Wakatida Taiko handles the taiko drums and shi shi dog dance. Travelin’ Max is a Navy/Armed Forces Entertainment road show, an instant party filled with prizes and giveaways, conga lines, sing-alongs and some plain ol’ ridiculous and fun contests for the whole family. Acoustic Live is the team of KLUSO and Doug Esterline performing down home Americana and folk rock music. Awkward Clowns, while technically for the kids but still lots of fun for adults, are regular performers at JUSCO and San A, off-base shopping centers.
