Eel wiggles its way to a school playground

Date Posted: 2007-02-10

Kindergarten children at Tokashiki were surprised this past weekend when they discovered an Ohunagi in a water puddle.

The ohunagi, a type of eel, was discovered at the playground adjacent to the local primary and junior high schools. It was swimming in a water puddle, and put up a fuss when teaches took steps to capture it. Once firmly in hand, the eel measured 130cm long, with a girth of 30cm. The kids were elated with the discovery.

Teachers pondered how the eel got to the school grounds. Takashiki Dam is upstream of the Issipi River, where ohunagi are protected, together with kawa unagi, another type eel. A longtime local inhabitant thinks the eel was sluggish after the recent cold snap, an couldn’t move up the river. The 10C temperature would impede an eel’s movement. Officials say they’ll keep the eel in a fish tank for research teaching purposes.
