Ai and Mika Miyazato falter in Evian Masters

Date Posted: 2010-07-29

Defending Evian Masters champion Ai Miyazato couldn’t find the range in this year’s event in Evian-Les-Bains, France, and fellow Okinawan Mika Miyazato tumbled from the lead at the halfway point, opening the door for South Korea’s Jiyai Shin to win her seventh title.

The 22-year-old Shin birdied the 18th hole to win the Evian Masters, shooting a 5-under-67 to claim the first prize of $487,500. Ai Miyazato finished tied for 19th, while Mika Miyazato finished 6th. Shin won by a single stroke over Morgan Pressel, Na Yeon Choi and Alexis Thompson.

Shin and Ai Miyazato have traded the top spot in the Ladies Professional Golf Association Rolex standing since earlier this year after Lorena Ochoa’s retirement. The Evian Masters was Shin’s first event in seven weeks after undergoing an emergency appendectomy only six weeks ago. The Evian Masters victory pushes Shin back into first place, with Miyazato second, Cristie Kerr third and Suzann Pettersen fourth.
