Japan's local foods showcased at Food FairBy: By Bill Charles Date Posted: 2010-03-18 ![]() ![]() ![]() Sponsored by Okinawa Television, OTV, the Food Fair captures the essence of Japan’s obsession with foods, with vendors coming from every nook and cranny of the island nation, bringing dozens of different noodle soups, yakisoba, seafood and sweets. Sapporo, known for its rich salmon and rice bowls topped with salmon roe, will present the dish, while Otaru district introduces Okinawans to roll cakes with fresh cream and toppings of strawberries and other fruit. Hokkaido has no shortage of natural salmon, sea urchin, Yesso scallops, salmon roe. What makes these special is they all come in a single lined box. There’s also seafood sushi, fresh and tasty. Sweets abound from many parts of Japan, and visitors to the Food Fair can taste them all. Some of the best are puddings with plenty of milk, while sauces are hand made and turned into thick, yummy desserts. Everyone knows ramen, but many people don’t realize the dozens of different noodle soups created by cities, towns, villages and districts from all over Japan. Visitors can spend the entire three days of the Food Fair tasting ramen noodles, and still not have tried but a few. From Tochigi Prefecture, noodles are made by using a bamboo bar. Good tasting, the soup has fresh gravy integrated. And we come back to the sweets. Too many to mention, except for looking out for caramel chocolates. They’re so popular, they’ll sell out quickly. No wonder. But there are still the cream puffs and roll cakes coming from every corner of the country. The Food Fair 2010 runs all three days, Saturday through Monday (which is a national holiday, incidentally), from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Entry fee is ¥500, plus the costs of whatever your palate motivates you to try.
