Typhoon Mitag to hit Sakishima, could bring heavy rains to Okinawa main island
According to the Okinawa Meteorological Agency forecast, the tropical cyclone east of the Philippines became the 18th typhoon of the season on Sep. 28th and was subsequently named Mitag.
As Mitag advances east of the Philippines heading west-northwest at 30 km/h, it’s expected to approach the Sakishima islands tonight (Sep. 30). It’s expected to be closest to the main island of Okinawa Oct. 1st.
The typhoon has atmospheric pressure of 980 hectopascals at its center with sustained winds exceeding 30 m/s and 45 m/s at gusts.The typhoon is expected to affect the Okinawa main island mainly bringing heavy rain and thunder, especially late Monday night and early Tuesday morning.
