Two people die in drowning accidents

Two people drowned in separate accidents on Tuesday.

57-year-old Hiroshi Ogimi, a police officer stationed at Uruma City Police Station, drowned while swimming at Gishitomi Island in Onna Village,

According to Uruma Police, Ogimi had been visiting the island with seven colleagues and their families. He went swimming alone around 3:30 p.m. and disappeared. A passerby found him lying face down behind a rock off the beach. His colleagues immediately tried to resuscitate him while waiting for an ambulance to arrive. He was taken to a hospital where he was confirmed dead two hours later.

In Ishigaki, a marine shop staff member, 57-year-old Akira Kuroshima, was found drifting in the sea about 4 km off Ogansaki Lighthouse on Ishigaki Island while on a diving tour with customers. A ship passing by spotted him floating on the ocean, but he was confirmed dead shortly after he was taken onboard.

Police and the Maritime Safety Agency are investigating the details of both accidents.
