According to the Meteorological Agency, the annual rainy season started in Okinawa Prefecture and Amami Islands Saturday,.
The agency says that this year, the season started four days later than average in Okinawa and two days later in Amami islands, which are in the southernmost part of Kagoshima Prefecture. However, in both regions, the start was three days earlier than last year.
Rainy and cloudy weather is forecasted to continue about a week because a front of wet air covering the regions.
On the average, the rainy season continues through June 23 in Okinawa. Last year, the rainy season in Okinawa ended on June 16.
