Okinawa City taxi driver arrested for hit and run
Okinawa Police arrested a 75-year-old taxi driver, Monday, on suspicion of negligent driving resulting in injury and leaving the scene of an accident.
According to police, taxi driver Hiroyasu Shimosato is suspected of hitting a 77-year-old woman crossing the street and then driving away without stopping or making an emergency call.
Investigators say he was driving his taxi on the national road 330 in Ageda, Okinawa City, about 10 p.m. Sunday evening, and while driving from Koza towards Goya Intersection, the accident happened.
The woman was taken unconscious to a hospital, but she recovered her consciousness later. According to the hospital, she suffered a head injury and broke her pelvic bone.
Security camera footage from the scene and eyewitness reports led Okinawa Police to arrest Shimosato.
Shimosato reportedly denies part of the charges claiming, “I radmit that I actually hit something, but I did not recognize that it was a person.”
