2,253 children on waiting list for nursery schools
A study by Okinawa Child Care Support Division published on Monday, found 2,253 children in the prefecture were on waiting lists to get into publicly certified nursery schools as of Apr. 1st that is 283 less than a year ago. The number decreased for the second year in a raw.
The city with the largest number of children on the waiting list is Okinawa City where 444 children were waiting for a slot, Uruma City had 333 on the list and Urasoe City 236. Naha City that was nationally on the 4th place last year managed to reduce the number to 200 that is 359 children fewer than a year ago. In 18 municipalities, including all remote islands, there were no one on the waiting list.
A representative of the Child Care Support Division said, “In order to reduce the number of children on the waiting lists, we have used government subsidies to build new nursery schools and to renovate existing ones to accommodate more children.”
