Sinkhole opens on Hwy 329 at Takahara

A sinkhole appeared early Saturday morning on Highway 329 in Takahara, Okinawa City. A motorist got a tire of his car stuck in the sinkhole about 3:25 a.m. and called police. No one was injured in the accident.
The collapsed hole was oval in shape, about 2.6 meters long, 1.6 meters wide and 2.7 meters deep. According to Okinawa Enterprise Bureau, the sinkhole was caused by a leaking water pipe that hollowed the ground.
The hole was located on the northbound lane of the road. Repair crews started to fill the hole Saturday morning (Apr. 22nd) and the repairwork was finished at 9:20 a.m.
Police removed traffic restrictions from the road at 9:45 a.m.
