Okinawa Karate International Festival scheduled for August

The first Okinawa Karate International Festival is scheduled for August 2018. Organizers aim to have participants from more than 40 countries and regions.

The schedule was approved Monday in the first general meeting of the festival executive committee held in a hotel in Naha. The committee, Okinawa Prefecture, and Okinawa Traditional Karate Shinkoukai are the sponsors of the festival. The aim of the organizers is to popularize and preserve the traditions of karate, and to promote interaction among both domestic and foreign karate practitioners, as well as to contribute to Okinawa’s tourism industry.

The festival will be held from Aug. 1st through 8th, 2018, at two venues, Okinawa Kenritsu Budoukan in Onoyama, Naha City and the new Okinawa Karate Kaikan in Tomigusuku City to be opened in March. The plan is to hold the festival every few years.

The festival program will consist of a tournament competition of “kata,” in addition to public demonstrations and seminars where the public can learn techniques of Okinawa’s traditional karate of each major style (ryuha).
