The construction of a multipurpose sports hall on the site of the former outdoor swimming pool in the Koza Sports Park is starting this month.

The new facility will have a total covered floor space of 3,380 square meters. Okinawa City officials say the facility will provide local residents a place where they can practice various sports unaffected by the weather.

The hall also provides an ideal indoor site for baseball practice. Hiroshima Toyo Carp, one of the several Japanese professional baseball teams coming to the prefecture for their annual spring camps, trains in Okinawa City every year, and will use the new facility as a practice field. The facility is scheduled to open in February 2018.

The total cost of the project is about ¥1.7 billion. The city will use a special government subsidy for public welfare facilities around defense installations to pay two-thirds of the cost. Okinawa City will pay the rest.

The building will be a one-story, reinforced concrete construction, and includes shower rooms, changing rooms, and sport equipment storages. The arena will be covered with an artificial turf. It can be used as a futsal court and for sport meetings of nursery schools.
