Agreement reached to fix Yui Rail elevators

A fight among bureaucrats concerning who’d foot the bill to repair malfunctioning elevators at two stations on Okinawa Urban Monorail Line “Yui Rail” has been resolved, and the public can expect the elevators to be back in operation by the end of October.

Officials from Okinawa Prefecture, Naha City, the General Office of South National Highways, and Okinawa Urban Monorail Co. held their second meeting on Aug. 25th at the Okinawa Urban Monorail head office. After the meeting, the participants announced that they have agreed the service of malfunctioning elevators at Tsubogawa and Miebashi Stations would resume no later than Oct. 31st, as the broken parts would be supplied earlier in the same month.

At the meeting, the participants decided to conduct a case study of contracts and agreements among the concerned offices to determine the flow of budget funds, and have the Okinawa Urban Monorail Co. responsible for arranging the repair of the elevators in the station passageways.

The Monorail Co. agreed to compile the results of the study and present it at the third meeting scheduled for mid September. More concrete plans for the future will also be decided in the September meeting.

Okinawa Governor Takeshi Onaga stated at his regular press conference on Aug. 25th regarding the problem that he felt ashamed to have troubled many residents and tourists, and stressed that it’s necessary to keep the monorail line in perfect condition.
