Abandoned newborn found on roadside bench in Naha
A newborn baby was found abandoned on a roadside bench in the Tomari district of Naha early Saturday morning.
A local resident heard the baby crying and called police about 02:30. A police patrol dispatched to investigate found the crying baby boy placed in a tote bag on the bench in front of a diving shop wrapped in a red children’s T-shirt.
The baby was taken to a hospital where doctors examined him and concluded that he was healthy and in good condition. Police say that the baby had a part of his umbilical cord still attached and he seemed to have born within the past couple of days.
Police are investigating the incident as a suspected abandonment and neglect of the responsibility to protect an infant.
