Governor visits Hawaii to promote World Uchinanchu Festival

Okinawa Governor Takeshi Onaga visited Hawaii on May 9th to promote the 6th World Uchinanchu Festival in Okinawa this October. During his visit he met with Hawaii Governor David Ige at the State Office of Hawaii.

During their talks, Governor Onaga informed Ige that more than 1,000 people of Okinawan descend from Hawaii attended the last World Uchinanchu Festival in 2011, reflecting strong bonds between Okinawa and Hawaii.

He also extended an invitation for Ige to attend the festival. “For this time, I want Hawaii Governor Ige to join the festival, and cheer up the Uchinanchu who take part in the event from all over the world,” Onaga said at their joint press conference.

Governor Ige whose grand parents came from Okinawa said. “I will try to adjust my schedule and believe I’m able to join the festival.”
