Okinawa team wins National Abacus Championship

In spite of being a country that first embraced electronic calculators, Japanese still put a high value on the skill of doing calculations with an abacus, a device which is older than a numerical system in itself with a history going back nearly 5,000 years.

The All Japan Abacus Championships were held in Kyoto on Aug. 8th, and Okinawa team took the championship for the first time in seven years since 2008. That marks the third championship for a team from Okinawa.

Representing Okinawa was a three-member team consisting of 15-year-old Satoka Teruya from Kyuyo High School, 15-year-old Yurina Chinen from Okinawa Shogaku Junior High School and 12-year-old Haana Shimabukuro from Awase Elementary School.

They competed in three categories that included multiplication and division.
