Onaga to meet Ambassador Kennedy next Friday in Tokyo

Okinawa Governor Takeshi Onaga announced at a press conference Thursday that he is slated to hold his first meeting with U.S. Ambassador to Japan Caroline Kennedy on June 19.

The meeting will be held in Tokyo, and Onaga is expected to repeat his opposition to the planned relocation of the U.S. Marine Corps’ MCAS Futenma to Henoko.

At the press conference, he also again hinted at the possibility of canceling the previous administration’s approval of the Japanese government’s application for the reclamation work off Henoko. The work is scheduled to start this summer, although many sources believe that the start of the work would in any case have to be delayed to later in the year.
