Taiwanese company mulls large hotel project in Toyosaki

One of the six major cement makers in China and Taiwan, Chia Hsin Cement Corp., is considering to build a large commercial complex in Toyosaki, Tomigusuku City.

The complex would include a large-scale hotel and shopping facilities. Officials at the Chia Hsin estimate the total investment would amount to about ¥40 billion.  Ayako Owan, a representative of Chia Hsin Ryukyu Kaihatsu, an affiliate of Chia Hsin Cement that would manage the development plan, had an interview with the Okinawa Times newspaper. In the interview she said that the company plans call for construction of a hotel with some 400 rooms, and an 8-story shopping facility in the complex if Toyosaki is selected as a MICE district.

In addition, the company plans also include constructing a chapel at a site near the Chura Sun Beach in order to meet the increasing demand for resort weddings.

Owan said the company has mulled opening a new business center in Toyosaki area for some time, and has studied the idea for two years. However, she stressed that the new business plan is still just a plan. “Toyosaki needs to be selected as a MICE site, and then the details of the project would be decided,” she said.

The company is currently developing the area on Kokusai Street at the center of Naha City on the land where the former Kokueikan movie theater used to stand. The movie theater was demolished in 2006. The development at the Kokueikan site includes building a large-scale five-star hotel among other facilities.
