Okinawa local election campaigns start

The start of local election campaigns in five cities in the prefecture  was officially announced Aug. 31st . with starting  of the campaigns of council members candidates of Nago, Okinawa, Ginowan, Nanjo and Ishigaki cities. The Election Day is September 9th.

The total number of contested seats is 125. 156 people  have announced to run as candidates at the election.  At Nago, which have an impact on the construction of the replacement facility for MCAS Futenma on Camp Schwab, 35 candidates run for 27 seats.  The Nago election is carefully watched nationwide.

This Okinawa local elections are regarded as a prelude to the gubernatorial race on November 16th.  102 of 156 candidates are presently posted out their official candidacy, which is two thirds of total. 49 people or 31% are new candidates. The ratio of males to females is 88% male, or 137 candidates, and 12%, or 19 candidates female.
