Miyakojima City Mayor’s pay cut 50% as punishment
According to local press reports, Miyakojima City Mayor Toshihiko Shimoji and six staff members of his office were having a party drinking alcohol in his office on Jul. 7th during Typhoon Neoguri, while a special evacuation alert was in force. According to some witnesses the party took place between 6 and 7:30 p.m.
The Miyakojima City Council took the matter to heart and, with an enthusiastic support from opposition parties, meted out a 50% pay cut for three months to the mayor as a punishment. The mayor himself has admitted to “an error in judgment” and had requested before the council meeting to be given a 30% pay cut. During he council meeting Mayor Shimoji stated “I blame myself for taking such careless action when, instead, I should have been making sure the safety of the citizens is taken care of.”
In an interview after the ruling, the mayor once again apologized for his actions by saying, “I believe this means that everyone, including the opposition parties, should humbly reconsider one’s conduct.”
