Elderly female diver in coma in Ishigaki

An elderly female tourist in her 70s was diving off the southern coast of Taketomi Island, Monday afternoon, when dive instructors noticed that she was in trouble.

According to the diving shop staff, for reasons so far unknown, the woman started to drown, and instructors pulled her out of the ocean. She was consequently transferred unconscious to the port where Ishigaki City Fire Department rescue team waited, and took her to a hospital where she remains in coma.

According to the Ishigaki Coast Guard, the woman had arrived in Ishigaki alone mid-September.
