Queen of belly dance to perform Saturday
It is being described as an exciting belly dance show filled with fascination that colors the night in Okinawa, as Nicole, the queen belly dance and super male belly dance unit “EG’ZILE” hits Okinawa.
Nicole, who’s been awarded not only dozens of domestic but also international titles, heads EG’ZILE, the hottest male belly dance unit performing today as the Gina unit. The performance takes place at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Small Hall of the National Theater Okinawa, 4-14-1 Jitchaku, Urasoe City. Advance tickets are ¥3,000 at E Plus, and Family Mart, and by calling 090-3141-1133.
The Tokyo-based group adds a new dimension to bellydance, a Western-coined name for “solo, improvised dances based on torso articulation” originating from the Middle East, especially raqs sharqi. Other names, which are sometimes used for the dance in English speaking countries, include Oriental Dance, and Arabic dance.
Belly dance takes many different forms depending on the country and region, both in costume and dance style, and new styles have evolved in the West as its popularity has spread globally.
